DISTRICT 12

This district guards the southern reaches of Illinois. Its lands span parts of Madison and St. Clair Counties, along with Alexander, Franklin, Hamilton, Jackson, Jefferson, Monroe, Perry, Pulaski, Randolph, Union, and Williamson Counties. Within its borders lie the cities of Belleville, Carbondale, East St. Louis, Marion, and O'Fallon.

The Twelfth is a realm shaped by changing borders. Through many great redrawings of the map, its domain has shifted with the fortunes of southern Illinois. For many years, the district stood as a Democratic stronghold. Champions such as Jerry Costello defended these lands from 1988 until his retirement in 2013. But as the political winds changed across rural southern Illinois, so too did the fate of the Twelfth.

In 2014, Republican Mike Bost claimed the district, marking the beginning of a new era. A former state legislator, Bost has defended the seat in every contest since, focusing his efforts on agriculture, sturdy infrastructure, veterans' affairs, and policies favored by the district's largely rural and conservative people. The Twelfth bears a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R+24, making it one of the Republican faction's strongest bastions.

Its people are drawn from many backgrounds, though the population is predominantly White, alongside smaller Black, Hispanic, and Asian communities. Across its vast lands, fertile farms, coal mines, manufacturing towns, and centers of learning all contribute to the district's identity. Among its greatest landmarks stands Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, a beacon of knowledge in the southern realm. Though rich in natural resources and history, the Twelfth faces many economic trials. Its median household income remains below the national average, reflecting the challenges shared by many rural and industrial communities.
