DISTRICT 15
This district stretches across the eastern and southeastern lands of Illinois, spanning parts of Champaign, Coles, Vermilion, Effingham, Crawford, Edgar, and Lawrence Counties. Its borders embrace the cities of Charleston, Danville, Effingham, Mattoon, and Paris.
The Fifteenth is a realm of wide fields and quiet towns. Though its borders have shifted through many great redrawings of the map, its character has remained steadfast. For decades, the district has stood as a Republican stronghold, reflecting the conservative spirit of eastern and southeastern Illinois. Vast farmlands, close-knit communities, and regional market towns form the backbone of the realm, while agriculture and manufacturing provide its greatest strength.
For many years, Republican John Shimkus defended these lands, serving from 1997 until his retirement in 2020. That same year, Republican Mary Miller claimed the seat and has guarded the district ever since. As its champion, Miller has devoted her efforts to agriculture, rural development, and cultural issues important to the district's conservative people.
The Fifteenth bears a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R+22, making it one of the Republican faction's strongest bastions. Its people are predominantly White, with smaller Black, Hispanic, and Asian communities found mainly in the larger towns. Though the district's median household income falls below the national average, its people remain steadfast, drawing their strength from the fertile prairie, thriving workshops, and enduring small-town traditions that have defined the Fifteenth for generations.
