DISTRICT 8
This district spans the lands of Cook, DuPage, and Kane Counties. Its borders encompass the cities of Elgin and Schaumburg, along with much of Chicago's northwest suburbs.
The Eighth is a realm shaped by change. Through many great redrawings of the map, its borders have shifted to match the movement of the people. Today, it unites a diverse alliance of urban and suburban communities beneath a single banner.
The district's political destiny has changed hands many times. For decades, Republican Philip M. Crane ruled these lands. But in 2004, Democrat Melissa Bean claimed victory, marking the beginning of a new era. Bean held the district until 2010, when Republican Joe Walsh captured the seat for a single term.
In 2012, Democrat Tammy Duckworth emerged victorious and served until 2016. Since 2017, the district has been represented by Raja Krishnamoorthi, who has successfully defended the seat in every election since. In the 2022 contest, he prevailed over Republican challenger Chris Dargis with 56.9% of the vote.
The Eighth leans toward the Democratic faction, bearing a Cook Partisan Voting Index of D+6. Its people come from many backgrounds, with a population that is approximately 54.4% White, 23.8% Hispanic, 14.3% Asian, and 4.3% Black. Entirely urban, the district is also among Illinois' most prosperous realms, with a median household income of 94,702 gold. Its diversity, shifting fortunes, and ever-changing borders have earned it a reputation as one of the state's great crossroads.
